Ingredients

  • 150 g all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 100 g unsalted butter cold, cubed
  • 1 tbsp cold water as needed
  • 100 g ground almonds
  • 100 g sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp ground cardamom
  • 50 g unsalted butter melted
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp sliced almonds
  • 1 tbsp powdered sugar optional

Instructions

  • Prepare the Tart Dough: In a bowl, mix flour, sugar, and cold butter, rubbing together until it resembles coarse crumbs. Add cold water and mix until a dough forms.
  • Chill & Roll: Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and chill for 30 minutes. Roll out on a floured surface and press into a tart pan. Prick with a fork and pre-bake at 180°C (350°F) for 10 minutes.
  • Make the Almond Filling: In a bowl, whisk together ground almonds, sugar, eggs, cardamom, melted butter, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  • Assemble & Bake: Pour the filling into the pre-baked tart shell, sprinkle with sliced almonds, and bake at 180°C (350°F) for 25 minutes, until golden and set.
  • Cool & Serve: Let the tart cool before dusting with powdered sugar. Serve with whipped cream or a cup of coffee.

Notes

  • Cardamom in Swedish Baking: This warm, citrusy spice is a staple in Scandinavian desserts, giving them a distinct aroma.
  • Tart Crust Variations: For extra richness, swap half the flour for ground almonds.
  • Serving Suggestions: Pair with fresh berries, lingonberry jam, or a drizzle of honey for an extra touch.
  • Storage: Keeps well in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
  • Fika: More Than Just a Coffee Break
In Sweden, fika is a cherished daily ritual that goes beyond simply drinking coffee—it’s about slowing down, enjoying good company, and indulging in a sweet treat. Traditionally, fika happens at least once a day (sometimes twice!) and is often accompanied by baked goods like kanelbullar (cinnamon buns), kladdkaka (sticky chocolate cake), or nutty, spiced pastries like this Swedish Almond & Cardamom Tart.
While coffee is the star of fika, the experience is about connection—whether with friends, family, or even colleagues. It’s an opportunity to take a break from the rush of daily life and appreciate the moment. Many Swedish workplaces even have designated fika breaks to foster socialization and well-being.
This almond tart is a perfect fika treat, pairing beautifully with a strong cup of coffee. The warm cardamom spice is a classic Nordic flavor, and the rich almond base makes it a satisfying, buttery indulgence. Try serving it with a dollop of lightly whipped cream or a spoonful of skyr for a tangy contrast!
